A naive, young governess (May) is hired by a charming bachelor (Firth) to look after his two young children in a grand mansion in rural England. There are no Vikings in The Viking QUn, a low-budget adventure from Hammer studios set in the British Isles during the Roman reign of Nero. Salina (Carita), the curiously Italian-accented daughter of a dying British king, inherits his kingdom on the eve of a treaty that splits power between the native monarchy and the Roman government. American star Don Murray (of Bus Stop and The Hoodlum Priest fame), looking oddly uncomfortable in a Roman tunic, is the fair-minded Roman governor-general Justinian, whose jurisprudence and willingness to compromise infuriates his bloodthirsty second in command. Plots from within both camps threaten not just the uneasy peace between the Britons and the Romans but the hot-and-heavy love affair between Salina and Justinian (whose flirtatious chariot race leads to a little riverside nooky). This sword-and-sandal-meets-bearskin-and-clubs adventure is at its best on location in the British countryside, where the grand scenery belies its meager budget, but the battle scenes suffer from a tiny cast of soldiers and lackluster choreography. There are plenty of scantily clad maidens (who knew the ancient British climate was so temperate?), Druid ceremonies with human sacrifices, and even a kinky flogging, but ultimately director Don Chaffey’s attempts to inject Hammer’s lurid edge into the drama come off as both perfunctory and forced. Though often entertaining, this period adventure never reaches the smart, sexy, and showy gothic splendor of Hammer’s horror classics. –Sean Axmaker

A lesser version of the Camelot legend, Sword of Lancelot is practically a one-man show by Cornel Wilde, who coproduces, directs, and plays the title role in this 1963 film. The major plot points are all here: Lancelot is King Arthur’s most valud Knight of the Round Table and a paragon of courage and virtu. Things change, however, when the good knight falls for Guinevere (Jean Wallace, Wilde’s wife), bride of Arthur (Brian Aherne, who has essayed this character more than once), and she for him. Ten years after Richard Thorpe’s Knights of the Round Table, the illicit romance this time is portrayed as a more intimate affair, and the sword fights have a more menacing reality (Wilde was an excellent fencer). A subplot concerns Arthur’s effort to forestall a challenge from a rival king, a problem that will inevitably catch Lancelot up in a personal conflict. As a director, Wilde (The Naked Prey) knows what he wants, though his skills are generally outmatched by the size of his themes. Still, there is something very likable about this movie, and it’s definitely recommended for anyone who can’t get enough of Camelot. –Tom Keogh

Both Nergal Heavy Industries and the military are very interested in Akito, as he seems to have demonstrated an ability to teleport between planets using the blu Chulip Crystals found on Mars. Typically, he doesn’t remember how–or if–he teleported from Mars; he only recalls waking up on Earth. Meanwhile, Yurika refuses to give up her one-sided romance with Akito and cheerfully defies the ambitious Erina Won. Megumi and Minato make an astonishing discovery about the identity of the “Jovian Lizards” who are at war with Earth: the pilot’s capsule in the captured Jovian mobile suit contains toys from the spoof ’70s mecha series “Gekigangar III”! Director Tatsuo Sato takes the story to new heights of absurdity in “Let’s Go with Hot-Blooded Anime”: the casts of Nadesico and “Gekigangar” watch each other’s programs, borrowing ideas for weapons and complaining about the plots. Among American TV cartoons, only Rocky and Bullwinkle and The Simpsons dared this kind of outrageous self-parody.
